Journaling Design Ideas Vol. 2: Five Healing Color Palettes for Summer
With summer just around the corner, my journal pages are naturally becoming more vibrant and full of life. From sunlit park picnics to blooming gardens and sudden rainy-day adventures, there seems to be an endless stream of inspiration waiting to be documented.
When creating a journal spread, the colors I choose are rarely just about aesthetics. More often, they are a direct reflection of my mood the moment my pen touches the paper. A harmonious color palette does more than just look pretty—it can genuinely heal anxiety, help untangle my thoughts, and capture tiny sparks of inspiration from my daily life or travels.
Today, I want to share five simple, quick, and incredibly atmospheric color combinations for your journal. Whether you are a beginner looking for aesthetic inspiration or someone building a visual diary, I hope these palettes bring a little summer magic to your pages.
1. Baby Blue + Soft Pink: A Gentle Daily Narrative

This is a classic, foolproof combination. I love using a large wash of low-saturation pink as a base, accented with soft hints of blue—or vice versa. It is an incredibly harmonious pairing that never feels overwhelming. For beginners, sticky notes and basic washi tape in these shades are wonderfully easy to find in any stationery shop. To elevate the spread and add a touch of elegance, try sprinkling in a few silver or gray details, like thin line stickers or metallic accents. It gives the layout a lot of breathing room.
2. Mint Green + Clear Water Blue: A Garden in Early Summer

This palette is deeply inspired by a breezy garden caught between spring and summer—half vibrant, fresh leaves, half clear ocean and sky. Because both colors are very sheer and light, they are perfect for creating large, dreamy backgrounds on my pages. If you worry that a pastel spread might look a little flat, the secret is adding texture. Layer in some plaid washi tape, or tear up vintage patterned paper. It instantly gives the page depth and a playful, tactile feel.
3. Midnight Black + Sakura Pink: A Striking Visual Clash

This is an absolute favorite of mine when I want a layout with tension and drama. It is inspired by the feeling of viewing cherry blossoms at night in Japan. In the stationery world, pure black memo pads or tapes are not very common. My trick? I print out my own dark, moody photographs to use as the base layer. You can use pictures of the night sky, deep blue seas, a dark wood cafe, or a dense green forest. A deeply saturated background makes soft pink elements pop instantly. It is perfect for recording profound, cinematic fragments of emotion.
4. Cobalt Blue + Cream: A Cool Summer Ocean Breeze

This combination carries a beautiful, quintessential summer texture, but it requires a little trick. Cream is such a delicate, light color that if you apply it directly onto white or light-colored journal pages, it completely disappears. To fix this, I do the opposite: I lay down a strong, bold blue base first, and then layer the soft cream elements on top. To make this palette truly special, I highly recommend mixing in different materials like lace details or translucent tracing paper. The way the light catches the sheer paper against the deep blue feels exactly like a cool ocean breeze.
5.Violet + Pastel Yellow: A Beautiful Surprise

I have always loved purple, but for a long time, I rarely used it in my daily journaling because it felt a bit intimidating to match. That changed one day when I accidentally placed a pale violet sticky note next to a soft yellow washi tape. I was immediately mesmerized by the magic of complementary colors. The violet brings a sense of quiet calm, while a touch of bright pastel yellow acts like a sudden beam of sunlight breaking through the clouds. It is a refreshing, unexpected pairing that is perfect for documenting those days filled with little, surprising moments of joy.
